When in Rome — Review

caturbanski9

Rating: ✨3.5/5✨

Spice: None, much to my dismay

Tropes: grumpy vs. sunshine, enemies to friends, distance, the difference in social status, small town, resistant to love

I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. I really liked the beginning of the book, but it did start to fizzle out for me by the end. It starts with pop sensation Rae Rose getting stuck in Rome, Kentucky with Noah, a pie shop owner. Rae Rose needs a break from fame, so she asks to hide out with Noah. Noah is not happy about his unexpected house guest, but as he gets to know her, it seems she might not be the spoiled celebrity he made her out to be.

The beginning started out with two interesting characters who have been burned by the people they loved and were supposed to love in return.

‼️SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT‼️

The middle of this book dragged. It got very repetitive with the back and forth of the “will they, won’t they?” Like I love me some angst, but it was getting ridiculous.

I am also kind of mad at the end of the book. It ends with Susan being the bad guy in it all. Like don’t get me wrong, she was pretty bad from the start, but I felt the story had more depth with her mom using her for money. Why couldn’t the mom be a little problematic at least? I wanted her mom to have a redemption arc, not just be washed away of any wrongdoing.

The final thing that bugged me was there was no sex. It was fade to black for an adult novel. Honestly, it didn’t even need to be explicit, but fade to black when you hyped up with attraction the WHOLE BOOK. Nope. I wasn’t a happy reader.

I think this book is great for readers who like light, no heavy-spice romances. If you are looking for something a little deeper, then this isn’t your book. I think that’s why I am so bothered by it. The book had me tearing up in the beginning, and I really understood where the character was coming from, but then we lost that great element throughout.
